SEStran - Case Study

SEStran – Case Study2018-05-23T14:09:44+00:00

Background to SEStran

Operating throughout South East Scotland, SEStran governs the public transport network that covers Edinburgh, Fife and all surrounding areas.

It was formerly a voluntary partnership of local authorities, became an official body in 2005, and now oversees everything from bus routes and cycle paths, to freight management and road maintenance.

The Regional Transport Strategy sets out goals for improved accessibility – particularly in rural areas – and there’s also a focus on environmental sustainability. Additionally, SEStran encourages locals to stay healthy by staging a number of public events each year, which promote walking and cycling over car use.

With such an exhaustive network, serving 1.5 million people, it’s essential to have a reliable IT system that minimises downtime. This is what Onestop IT does best.

Challenges

Many IT projects have been implemented for SEStran by Onestop IT as there have been various system upgrades – both software and hardware – as well as office re-organisations and moves to new premises.

One such project was to install a backup solution that would enable cloud-based recovery of servers, should they ever fail. In addition, as a public sector organisation, SEStran needed a reliable data protection solution with an option for disaster recovery in the cloud, should the worst ever happen.

Angela Chambers:

They provide a high level of service and are a very innovative and forward-thinking company, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

The implementation of Datto was proposed – a dedicated platform that guarantees business continuity using a fully-secure virtual space.

At regular intervals, Datto records a backup of the entire system, constantly updating, validating and storing VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) files. Users are then emailed screenshot verification, notifying them that each backup is viable. If the network ever goes down, a virtual copy can be immediately booted with the click of a button. It’s that simple.

Outcomes

Onestop IT takes real pride in working alongside community-minded, sustainable enterprises like SEStran – it’s great to know our work is helping to create positive change in the region.
